Think Outside the Box: 4 Alternatives to the Classic Cubicle

As new trends in office design emerge this year, the classic cubicle is no longer the most desirable way to organize an office. There are newer concepts more conducive to productivity, collaboration, and efficient work processes. These new designs tend to rely on a more open layout, but they also provide privacy when people want it.

Listed below are four ideas for how you can reinvent the classic cubicle structure in your office space.

1.  Try Transparent Cubicles

The primary reason that more offices are doing away with cubicles is that they create a boxed-in sensation that can stifle work productivity and employee morale.

You can still provide defined workspaces without creating that claustrophobic sensation by switching to glass partitions. The transparency will help your employees feel less isolated, but they can still enjoy the private space of a standard cubicle.

2.  Eliminate the Division

Some companies find that it’s more beneficial to turn their office space into one large conference area. This option allows you to get rid of most individual desks once you have conference tables and chairs delivered and installed.

The new look will provide an ideal atmosphere for collaboration between teams. You can keep one or two cubicles in the corners of the office when privacy is necessary for phone calls or in-person consultations.

3.  Use Walls to Create Open Offices

Rather than having traditional offices or cubicles, create open offices with just one wall as a backdrop. You can set up multiple workspaces along one wall, but keep the rest of the area open. This provides extra space for more comfortable office furniture, larger desks, or other welcoming decor.

Since there will be fewer physical barriers, the office’s lighting will reach farther to reduce the need for accent lighting.

4.  Shared Office Spaces

You can also construct larger offices to be used by an entire team or shared by different teams at different times. This is the ideal setup when you allow your employees to work from home on a part-time basis.

While one team works remotely, the other team uses the office. You can get great deals on office furniture to help you set up these shared work spaces. Although the larger offices can still be enclosed, use walls made from glass or other transparent materials to keep that open feel to the floor plan.
